The Baby Stole My Banana

McKenna just tickled me the other day when we were sitting on the couch, Bailie and I both eating bananas, and she decided that was no longer my banana but hers. Keeping in mind she hasnt had banana before and Im pureeing her foods, I had to think about it for a moment. I have a few friends who are big Baby Led Weaning advocates.  BLW says that when a baby starts reaching for your food (around 6 months) you give it to them in managable chip sized pieces and instead of learning to swallow then chew like typical baby foods, they learn to chew then swallow. Honestly this scares me because of the choke factor, but after much study I see that, long before blenders, steamers, choppers, etc folks simply had to feed their babies food like this when they first started and they didnt choke to death. Infact truth is God made babies with a tounge thrust action that keeps them from choking. If a bit of food too big makes it to the back of their mouth, they gag a little and their tounge moves it to the front of its mouth. Its nearly imposible to choke an infant, where as its very easy to choke a toddler, who has lost that reflex, just about the time we start introducing bigger solids.

That being said with all that info when she started reaching for the banana that her sister and I were already enjoying, I thought for a minute and then decided, “ok we’ll give it a shot”! And of course me with my camera right there, I had to take pictures!

What I didnt know was how much she was going to like it! Turns out this is her new favorite food! Right after this picture she broke the top off the banana and was left with half a banana in her hand and boy did she go to town on it!

She spent a good 15 minutes or so sucking, gumming, and enjoying the greatness of the banana! Here are the rest of the photos 🙂

Now will I stop making baby food purees? Nope, not at all actually, but it was nice to see how much she loved the banana and I know that she is ok to eat them and has since had two more. Its for sure her favorite food!

Other foods shes had: Oatmeal, Peas, and Avacados

Avacdo = No Go

So far McKenna has had homemade baby oat cereal and baby peas and loved them! Especially the peas! So this week we tried Avacado. Unfortunatly she didnt like it at all! Spit out every bite I gave her. We’ll try it again next month and see if she comes around. In the mean time heres, how its made and a couple pictures of her eating it. . . sorta … lol

What You Need:

  1. Blender or food processor
  2. 1/4 avacado
  3. 2 ounces breastmilk (or formula)
  4. Bowl, Spoon, Bib
  5. and as always … the Baby!

What you need to do: This one is easy! Just cut the 1/4 avacado into a couple pieces and put it into the blender with the 2 ounces of milk. Pour into the dish and serve (to a hopefully willing babylol)

As you can see it was not a hit for us this time around, each bite was spit right back out, but we’ll try again later and see how it goes.

Happy Pi Day

Today March 14th is National Pi day! Why? Well because its 3.14 silly! So to celebrate and have fun with your

For my picture I must post this apron! I love Pie and Pi and Aprons so naturally I really REALLY want this apron! For anyone else who's madly in love with this apron, click the picture to see who makes and sells it, then be sure to buy me one when you get yours 🙂

students and kiddos I went on the hunt for the BEST Pi day activities and heres what I found:

From the Pi Day website I found these:

  1. Get paper clips and do a different color for every digit! This is my favorite and I think Im gonna go get some paper clips from walmart this afternoon to do this with Miss Bailie and a picture is sure to come!
  2. Another person posted that they, “… are using the first 20 digits in pi and write[ing] a story using the numbers like 3.14 u will use a 3-letter word then a 1-letter word then a 4 letter word and keep going” This sounds like a blast and it would take alot of fun creativity but its a bit above Miss Bailie so maybe next year, however it still sounds like fun!
  3. Lastly there was one where you can get two colors of beads and make a necklace using one color for the odd numbers and one for the even numbers. This would be especially fun for young girls and I assume we’ll do this one this evening too! Also pictures to come 🙂

The next site I discovered was Education World. My top 3 favorites there were:

  1. First off they talk about doing an internet field trip where you learn about Pi along the way! My favorite stop, for our age group, here were the Exploratorium!
  2. They also had this video showing and teaching you all about Pi. Its a little above Bailie’s head but I enjoyed watching it 🙂
  3. And lastly what kid wouldnt enjoy Pi Day Songs!?!

On Teach Pie they had some fun stuff too:

  1. Music Fun where you can listen to, write music, or sing prewritten songs.
  2. Or you can, “create a pi chain with loops of construction paper, using a different color for each of the ten digits.
  3. And lastly, one of my favorites from this site was to, “pass out paper plates, and assign each student a digit. Have them draw the number on the plate, and color and decorate it. On Pi Day, hang them along a string or on the hallway wall, or have everyone hold their plate and stand in one big circle.

Some other fun sites were:

Now of course to end our day, on top of our other Pi day projects, tonight we must eat some Pie for desert!

Feel free to share in the comments what your favorite Pi Day activities are!

Rolling, Rolling, Rolling … Keep That Baby Rolling (to the Walmart tune)

I have been trying to not encourage Kenna too much, before shes ready, to roll over. So its been fun watching her do it by accident a few times.Twice now both directions, both intentional but somewhat accidental :-))

Back to Front

The first time we were at my sister in law, Marissa’s, house. We were sitting on her couch and McKenna was next to me laying on her back when she started to roll over to her side and got stuck (with us going, “do it do it do it do it”) and then she fell back onto her back, but she tried again over to her side and finally flopped over to her stomach. She was on a bit of an incline so that helped of course, but it was so wonderful to see her do it for the first time and be with family when she did!

Then a few nights later I had decided to put her to sleep on her back. Well I usually put her to sleep on her side and I guess she didnt like laying on her back so she rolled over to her side, and with out her usually side-laying props, she managed to fall onto her stomach. I woke up to a baby sleeping face down and it gave me a heart attack (not literally of course but Im sure you can imagine my panic) but she was fine.

Front to Back

So then a couple days ago I went to go to the bathroom and had to put her down and had no where to set her right then so I laid her on her on her stomach and like usual she was lookin around, and then all of a sudden she very quickly rolled over to her back and cooed at the ceiling. She did it like she’d been doing it for years and I couldnt even jump up and hurray about it because as you recall I was currently using the bathroom…. what are the odds. So then as soon as I can I grab her up and rush to the living room to find any living soul possible to show how wonderfully she can roll over and when I lay her back on her stomach she wobbles from side to side then cried her eyes out. So I picked her up and didnt try again.

Yesterday I was at my friend Cindi’s house and I was telling her about the ^ previous story and I laid her down on her living room floor on her stomach and there she was head up and looking around and quick as before she rolled over to her back! I was so excited that someone was there this time to see it! Especially since when we tried it again she just wobbled around, laid her head down, and cried.
